A Blank Slate

Today I knew exactly what I had to do. I thought to myself, "You have to find a passion and dedicate yourself too it." A conventional thinker would say I should get a job. Ah, but me, I am an out-0f-the-box thinker. Why complicate things at this point in my life when I could do something born of pure inspiration. Therefore, I sat down with a laptop and an old idea.

Hello, my name is Sophie. I grew up with the notion that history was uncool. This is silly considering I loved books, learning, and school. Wouldn't the subject of history interest me? Well, I honestly think this was a societal and peer pressure driven notion. The notion that be smart about something is uncool and geeky. It's dumb to be smart essentially. Who knows if this is a sexist strain of down playing a girl's educational value or just commercial and popular pressures to dress in brand names, know famous people, and make loads of cash.

Despite these pressures, I wrote an essay in the 9th grade. It was a lengthy research paper on why I wanted to be a professor. To this day I still want to be a professor. A trip to the university and I fell in love with research. I am an loquacious and prolific story teller (a chatty Cathy). Why kill the family tradition with me? So, I hopped right into the "uncool" crowd and discovered how cool it felt to learn and teach myself new things. I read stories rather than text books. Of course, I established my foundation in methodologies. Yet, it was treasure hunting in the library for clues to a puzzle. Then write about it and work it out, which feels like exercise for the brain. Often times it's painful. But it was fun and thrilling too. I never knew it could be like that, and I want to share that excitement with young minds like mine.

So with an obsession with books, a knack for crafting, and a need to deliver purpose to my life, I created this blog. The themes will be on a whim and from throughout history and across continents. I sway toward the weird and strange as well (which goes over better in a blog community than in an academic one).

So, here goes!!
